When many people first begin learning photography, the camera can feel like it is speaking another language. Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus modes, white balance, exposure compensation — it can be a lot to take in. Then at some point you run into two more terms that sound highly technical: metering and histograms.
At first, those two subjects can seem intimidating. But once they begin to make sense, they can completely change the way you understand exposure.
That was certainly true for me.
When I was first learning about histograms and metering, I had a hard time fully grasping what I was seeing — especially the left and right sides of the histogram. During my photography courses, we touched on those subjects, but later the school closed and I had to transfer my credits to The Art Institute University of California online. Somewhere in that transition, I found myself still trying to make all of it truly click in my head.
What finally helped me was a combination of my professor’s instruction and a number of YouTube videos by professional photographers. Once I heard the ideas explained in a few different ways, it started to make sense. The pieces came together. The left side of the histogram represented darker tones, the right side represented brighter tones, and suddenly it all felt less mysterious.
That is really the goal of this article.
This is not meant to be a highly technical engineering explanation. It is meant to be a practical, beginner-friendly explanation of what metering and histograms are, how they work together, and how they can help you make better exposure decisions whether you shoot with Nikon, Canon, or another interchangeable lens camera system.
What Is Metering?
In simple terms, metering is the camera’s way of measuring light.
When you point your camera at a scene, the camera evaluates the light and tries to determine an exposure that will produce a usable image. In automatic and semi-automatic modes, that light reading helps the camera decide what shutter speed, aperture, or ISO to use. In manual mode, the meter still gives you guidance by showing whether your current settings are leaning darker or brighter than what the camera considers “correct.”
That sounds straightforward, but there is an important detail: the camera does not understand the scene the way you do.
It does not know whether you are photographing a bride in a white dress, a black horse in deep shade, a snowy field, or a sunset with intentional silhouette. It simply measures reflected light and makes an educated guess based on the meter and the exposure system.
Most of the time, that guess is pretty good. But sometimes the camera’s “correct” exposure is not what you want.
That is where understanding metering becomes useful.
The Main Metering Modes
Most cameras offer several metering modes. Nikon and Canon use slightly different names in some cases, but the basic ideas are very similar.
1. Matrix Metering / Evaluative Metering
This is the mode most photographers use most of the time.
On Nikon cameras, this is usually called Matrix Metering. On Canon cameras, it is generally called Evaluative Metering.
This mode looks at a broad portion of the scene — often the whole frame — and tries to determine a balanced exposure. It is designed to work well in everyday situations and is usually the best starting point for beginners.
If you are walking around photographing landscapes, travel scenes, family moments, or casual portraits, this is often the safest and most practical choice.
2. Center-Weighted Metering
Center-weighted metering still looks at the frame, but it places more importance on the center area.
This can be helpful when your subject is roughly centered and you want the exposure to be influenced more by that central area than by the outer edges of the image.
It is an older but still useful mode, especially for portraits or scenes where you want a little more predictability than an all-over scene evaluation.
3. Spot Metering
Spot metering measures a very small part of the frame.
This is useful when you want to meter very precisely from one particular area — for example, a person’s face, a bird against a bright sky, or a moonlit subject in a dark environment.
Spot metering can be extremely powerful, but it also requires more care. Because it samples such a small area, the exposure result can change dramatically depending on exactly where you place that spot.
4. Partial Metering
On some Canon cameras, you may also see Partial Metering, which is somewhat like a larger version of spot metering. It reads a smaller central area than evaluative metering, but a larger area than true spot metering.
For some photographers, this becomes a useful middle ground.
In other words, metering influences the camera’s recommendation — but it does not replace your judgment.
What Is a Histogram?
If metering is the camera’s estimate, then the histogram is your visual feedback.
A histogram is a graph that shows how tonal values are distributed in your image. It does not show where objects are located in the frame. Instead, it shows how much of the image is dark, how much is midtone, and how much is bright.
To put that in simple terms:
the left side of the histogram represents dark tones and shadows
the middle represents midtone values
the right side represents bright tones and highlights
The height of the graph shows how many pixels exist at those tonal values.
When I was learning this, that was the part I struggled with the most at first — understanding what the left and right sides truly represented. Once that clicked, the histogram started to feel much less like a technical obstacle and more like a practical tool.
And that is really what it is.
A histogram is not something to fear. It is simply a way of seeing exposure in a more objective form.
One of the biggest beginner misunderstandings is thinking that there is one “perfect” histogram shape.
There is not.
A dark moody scene may naturally have more information on the left side. A snowy landscape or bright high-key image may lean heavily to the right. A normally lit everyday scene may have more information spread across the center.
That means a histogram should be judged in context.
For example:
A night scene may show a histogram weighted toward the left.
A misty winter scene may show more information toward the right.
A balanced daylight landscape may show a fuller spread across the graph.
The goal is not to force every histogram into the middle. The goal is to understand whether the tonal distribution matches your subject and your intent.
What you do want to watch for are extreme situations where the graph is jammed tightly against one edge, especially if important details are being lost.
If data is pushed too far to the left, you may be losing shadow detail.
If data is pushed too far to the right, you may be blowing out highlights.
That does not always mean the image is ruined. Sometimes clipping is intentional or acceptable. But the histogram helps you notice when it is happening.
Why Metering and Histograms
Work So Well Together
Metering and histograms are closely related, but they are not the same thing.
Think of it this way:
Metering helps the camera decide on exposure.
The histogram helps you evaluate the result.
Your camera meter may suggest an exposure, but the histogram lets you confirm whether the image is recording tones the way you want.
This is especially useful in tricky lighting situations such as:
backlit portraits
snowy scenes
dark subjects against bright backgrounds
sunsets and sunrises
concerts or stage lighting
high-contrast outdoor scenes
A camera meter can be fooled by scenes that are unusually bright or unusually dark. The histogram gives you a second layer of information so you are not relying only on the camera’s guess — or only on the brightness of your LCD screen, which can sometimes be misleading.
Exposure Compensation: When
the Meter Needs a Little Help
This brings us to one of the most useful tools in practical photography: exposure compensation.
Exposure compensation allows you to tell the camera, “I know what you think the exposure should be, but I want it a little darker or a little brighter.”
If you dial in:
-1 EV, the image will be darker
0 EV, you are accepting the camera’s metered exposure
+1 EV, the image will be brighter
This is extremely useful because cameras often try to render scenes toward a middle brightness.
For example:
A very bright snowy scene may come out too gray or too dark unless you add positive exposure compensation.
A dark subject or moody low-key scene may become too bright unless you dial in negative exposure compensation.
A backlit portrait may need positive compensation if the subject’s face is too dark.
This is one of those small concepts that can make a big difference for beginners. You do not always need to abandon your shooting mode or overthink every setting. Sometimes you simply need to recognize that the meter needs guidance.
A Simple Real-World Example
Let’s say you are photographing a person outdoors at sunset.
The sky is bright. The subject is darker. If your camera uses evaluative or matrix metering, it may try to protect the brightness of the sky, which could leave the person underexposed.
If you look only at the back screen, you might not be fully sure what is happening. But if you check the histogram, and if you also evaluate the subject visually, you may realize the person’s face is too dark.
At that point, you have options:
switch metering modes
use spot metering on the subject
recompose and meter differently
add positive exposure compensation
expose manually if you want full control
This is why metering and histograms are best understood as practical field tools rather than abstract textbook ideas.
Do Nikon and Canon Handle
This the Same Way?
Broadly speaking, yes.
Both Nikon and Canon cameras provide:
multiple metering modes
exposure scales or meters in the viewfinder/LCD
histogram review on captured images
exposure compensation controls
The terminology differs a little:
Nikon commonly uses Matrix, Center-Weighted, and Spot
Canon commonly uses Evaluative, Center-Weighted Average, Spot, and on some models Partial
The concept, however, is very similar. Regardless of brand, the camera is measuring light, giving an exposure recommendation, and allowing you to override or refine that recommendation.
So if you are learning on one brand now and later use another, the underlying principles still carry over.
A Beginner-Friendly Way to Practice
If you want to understand this subject better without feeling overwhelmed, try this:
Practice Exercise 1: Watch the Histogram
Photograph three very different scenes:
something dark
something normally lit
something very bright
Then compare the histograms. Notice how the tonal distribution shifts.
Practice Exercise 2: Change Metering Modes
Photograph the same scene using:
evaluative/matrix
center-weighted
spot
Compare the results and notice how the exposure changes depending on what part of the frame the camera prioritizes.
Practice Exercise 3: Use Exposure Compensation
Photograph the same subject at:
-1 EV
0 EV
+1 EV
Then compare which version you prefer and why.
This kind of hands-on experimentation is one of the best teachers.
Final Thoughts
Metering and histograms can sound intimidating when you first hear those words, but they really boil down to two ideas:
your camera is measuring light
the histogram helps you understand how the tones were recorded
That is it.
Once you begin to understand what the meter is doing, and once the left, center, and right sides of the histogram begin to make sense, exposure becomes less mysterious. You start making more intentional decisions. You stop feeling like the camera is guessing for you, and you begin to feel more in control of the final image.
I know from personal experience that these subjects can take time to click. They certainly did for me. But once they do, they become part of the foundation of seeing light more clearly as a photographer.
And in many ways, that is what photography is all about.
